Always Bet On Black!

In the film Passenger 57 Wesley Snipes utters the immortal words (despite 80’s and 90’s action films being slated as cheesy, I loved them!) “Let me give you a word of advice……….always bet on black!” Wesley meant this in an entirely different context of course. To see what he meant you should watch it. It’s good.

Always bet on black! Black is a movie star colour! It’s the colour every other colour wants to be (theres a claim orange is the new black but I wouldn’t listen to this!). Black is dark, its edgey, its sexy and if utilised correctly can work wonders for anyones wardrobe! Man or woman. From red hair to blonde and all colours in between. The power of black is it provides a great contrast to every other colour including our skin tones. This should not be underestimated when putting together outfits. Black allows you to recycle your wardrobe too. Simply put ALWAYS BET ON BLACK!

I’ve a few outfits lined up to show you the power of black. The focal point of the outfits is not necessarily black. The statement pieces are e.g. the blazer, the waistcoat, the bomber jacket, the leather jacket and the short sleeve shirt however black allows this to happen. Think of black in this case as Sergio Busquets of Barcelona. He does the donkey work of breaking up play and getting the ball back so Messi and co (what incredible company to be in!) can be the stars of the show! The statement pieces are the stars of the show here but without black it wouldn’t be possible!

Black and A Blazer

A blazer and t-shirt are going to be a big Spring/Summer 16 trend. Simple yet smart. Cool without the effort (or appearing to have little thought put into it.) All black everything really highlights the blazer in this outfit. The Wayfarer style sunglasses trend shows no sign of slowing down either so pick up a pair! Black accessories and your good to go!

Frank’s Fashion Tip

Keep it simple. The blazer does all the talking in this outfit. Its a light weight blazer. Consider the weight of your blazer if you are going for this look or you could up with a different kind of HOT. Rather than looking HOT you could be feeling HOT……..and sweaty. Not good! Showing off the “ankle” or as my good friend and work colleague  Eanna Grealy stated the “frankle” gives the outfit a modern fresh finish!

Black, a Shirt and Blazer

For a more dapper look add a shirt to your all black everything. I’ve gone for a grey short sleeve shirt. The idea here for me was to keep it simple. The grandad shirt collar (still on trend on the high street definitely buy a few!) adds a formal element to the outfit. I love the contrast buttons. I’m obsessed with white buttons!

The only new piece here is the short sleeve shirt from River Island bought on sale for €18!

Frank’s Fashion Tip

Experiment with your style. Take pictures. Be vain and look in the mirror. It’s the only way to find out what suits you. A moment of inspiration hit me while I was doing this. “what could make this outfit look even better? I asked myself” A black waistcoat! A casual waistcoat. This waistcoat has faux leather lapels which really adds character to it. I love such little design features.

To achieve a more laid back look is easier than you think. Simply undo the buttons on the shirt, roll up the sleeves on the blazer and TA – DA!

Black and A Waistcoat

Remember my moment of inspiration earlier?! Introducing a black waistcoat. Here it is in all it’s glory!

Frank’s Fashion Tip

We’ve already established black is the core colour here. A simple way to enforce this even more is to roll the sleeve of your black t-shirt over the sleeve of the shirt. This little feature looks great!
